Frank de Boer lasted just four games as Crystal Palace manager as the defeat to Burnley last week proved to be the final straw for the club's hierarchy. Roy Hodgson has arrived as his replacement 15 months removed from his unceremonious end as manager of England. Hodgson was a boyhood Palace fan, but faces a massive challenge to turn the fortunes of the club around.
Good afternoon and welcome to the live commentary of the Premier League clash between Crystal Palace and Southampton at Selhurst Park.
Palace were hammered by Huddersfield on the opening day of the season before suffering defeats at the hands of Liverpool and Swansea. Although they played well enough against Burnley an early mistake from Chung-yong Lee and a plethora of missed chances spelled the end for the Dutchman. There's talent for Hodgson to work with and he will be eyeing a strong start to his tenure.
Southampton have had a solid start to life under Mauricio Pellegrino, winning one and drawing two of their opening four fixtures. The Saints suffered a surprising home defeat last time out against Watford - therefore they need a response this afternoon against Palace.
The team news has been announced and we'll start with the home side.
Southampton subs: McCarthy, Stephens, Van Dijk, Targett, Ward-Prowse, Boufal, Gabbiadini.
Hodgson has refrained from making sweeping changes in his first match. He makes only one alteration from the team that lost to Burnley last week as Ruben Loftus-Cheek comes into the fold to replace Lee. The loanee could start on the left side of a three-pronged attack alongside Christian Benteke and Andros Townsend.
Pellegrino has made four changes to his side from their defeat to Watford. Maya Yoshida, Shane Long, Mario Lemina and Dusan Tadic all come into the starting line-up this afternoon.
FLASHBACK! Palace won this contest last season 3-0 at Selhurst Park as a brace from Christian Benteke and a strike from James Tomkins handed them the victory.
The players are out on the pitch and Hodgson receives a warm welcome as he makes his way to the dugout. We should be underway shortly.
STAT ATTACK! Palace have won just two out of their 16 Premier League matches against Southampton, although those two victories have come in the last two clashes at Selhurst Park.
HALF-TIME: CRYSTAL PALACE 0-1 SOUTHAMPTON
Roy Hodgson's tenure at Crystal Palace will have to begin with a comeback if the Eagles are to avoid losing their fifth game on the bounce to start the Premier League season. Southampton hold a 1-0 lead at the break thanks to Steven Davis' strike in the sixth minute and the Saints have been good value for their advantage. Palace have had chances through Christian Benteke and Ruben Loftus-Cheek, but their wait for a league continues.
The players are back out for the second half, so we should be underway shortly.
FULL-TIME: CRYSTAL PALACE 0-1 SOUTHAMPTON
Thanks for joining our commentary this afternoon. Until next time, goodbye.
Life at Crystal Palace begins with a defeat for Roy Hodgson as the Eagles become the first side in English top-flight history to open the season with five defeats and no goals scored. Steven Davis scored the only goal of the game to secure the victory for Southampton, with Mauricio Pellegrino's men bouncing back well from their loss to Watford last week. Hodgson will have to find a cure to his side's problems soon as they remain rooted to the foot of the table.
