Ribery has had enough of being a punching bag and retaliates with a cynical slice on Wellington. Kucher leads the Shakhtar reaction, but Srna, not for the first time, douses the flames.
89'
O. Hladkyi enters the game and replaces Luiz Adriano.
Adriano is pulled fo Gladkiy. Not the most involved night from the striker. Moments later, Fernando stands tall to deny Robben a shooting opportunity inside the area.
87'
Nothing doing for Lewandowski and Bayern as the Pole fails to take a pass from Rafinha on the turn towards goal. There was a brief chance on the break for the hosts, but Boateng snuffs it out.
85'
Robben's corner is punched clear by Pyatov, and on the very next play, Schweinsteiger becomes the latest to pick up a yellow card for chopping down Wellington Nem, who had only just come on.
84'
Wellington Nem enters the game and replaces Taison.
B. Schweinsteiger gets yellow.
83'
Rakitskiy gives the ball away and that sparks Robben on the break down the right. The sirens go off in the Shakhtar backline but they needn't have worried, as Rakitskiy cleans up his own mess.
81'
The referee keeps his yellow card on speed dial with another booking flashed, this time in the direction of Jerome Boateng. The centre-back had tripped up Taison rather needlessly.
80'
J. Boateng gets yellow.
79'
First substitution of the game from Shakhtar, with the ornery Douglas Costa swapped out for Marlos. Smart change, not least because the Brazilian was already on a yellow and looked the most likely to be booked again, especially with the referee already having issued one red tonight.
78'
Marlos enters the game and replaces Douglas Costa.
Minute
Description
77'
Fred gets yellow.
Fred gets his name taken by the referee for upending, you guessed it, Ribery. The Frenchman may not always be the most likeable character, but he's mostly been the victim tonight.
75'
R. Lewandowski enters the game and replaces M. Götze.
After an initial flurry mostly brought on by the roar of the crowd, Shakhtar have really not done much to press home their numerical advantage. They'll never have a better chance at beating the 2013 Champions though.
73'
Guess I spoke too soon. Lewandowski will make his appearance despite Bayern's precarious situation. Off goes Gotze. The Pole will provide an infinitely better hold-up presence up top, which will help to stabilize Bayern and give them an outlet to relieve pressure.
71'
I'm starting to have doubts that we'll be seeing Lewandowski anymore. Guardiola reacts to the red card by hauling off Muller and introducing Badstuber in his place. First European appearance of the season for the injury-stricken defender.
70'
H. Badstuber enters the game and replaces T. Müller.
69'
Bayern also played with 10 men against Schalke recently, coming away with a 1-1 draw. I joked that a red card against Die Roten was the only way to make their games fair from a possession standpoint. We'll see that theory put to the test in the closing stages.
67'
To say that recent red-card developments have encouraged Shakhtar is a gross understatement. They can smell blood, and their fans are absolutely losing their minds in the stands, roaring their team on. Nil-nil suddenly looks very tasty for the Bavarians!
65'
Xabi Alonso gets a second yellow card and is sent off.
RED CARD! BAYERN DOWN TO 10! Alonso, attempting to catch up to Teixeira, only contrives to wrestle the Brazilian to the turf. Having already been booked, he's been shown his second yellow and must now march off in his 100th Champions League game!
64'
Ribery smashes one over the top after the flag had already been raised. He looks a little miffed. Bayern's passing triangles and quick one-twos are just not connecting in their usual manner.
62'
As this half has worn on, Shakhtar look more and more comfortable defending against the waves of Bayern possession. Simply not good enough from the Bundesliga visitors.
60'
The fans inside the L'viv Arena raise their voices in unison again, and I've got to say that they've been fantastic tonight, even with their team struggling to orchestrate much in the final third.
58'
Douglas Costa gets yellow.
It's becoming something of a personal vendetta between Douglas Costa and Ribery. Brazil and France go at it in a battle for the ball, and the former clocks the latter in the chops with a flailing elbow. Boateng rushes over furiously to defend his team-mate. The referee has a big decision to make and opts for the yellow card for Douglas Costa, when it could have easily been red.
56'
Ribery is sent tumbling after a challenge by Srna and, true to form, up jogs Douglas Costa to stand over to taunt the fallen Frenchman. Ribery unsurprisingly takes offence, and there's a brief coming-together on the touchline. Srna leads the efforts to quell the fires.
54'
Lewandowski is indeed being put through his paces on the touchline. Bayern continue to make hard work of this first leg against Shakhtar with about 10 minutes gone in the second half.
52'
Lewandowski is the only real attacking option on the Bayern bench, and it won't be surprising to see the Pole before long. Weiser can also provide some thrust down the flanks, but will Guardiola trust the 20-year-old in such a big game?
50'
A rare spell of possession for Shakhtar in the opposition half. This is as long as they've kept the ball for any point in this game. However, it all ends poorly when a deep ball from the back catches at least three attackers offside.
48'
Somehow, Shakhtar keep Bayern from having a crack on goal during a severe spell of pressure. Muller tries to dance into shooting space, before Schweinsteiger is robbed of the ball at the top of the box. It eventually goes out for a corner, but Schweinsteiger commits a foul on his man in the ensuing struggle.
46'
Here we go again!
45' +1
Into the only minute of first-half stoppage time here. However, Bayern can't orchestrate one last assault on the Shakhtar penalty area as a poor ball from Ribery heads out for a goal kick. Seconds remain until the referee blows the whistle.
44'
There's been a few glimpses that Shakhtar could punish Bayern with pace on the break. As Wolfsburg will happily confirm, Die Roten can get caught with their defensive line too high up the pitch.
42'
Robben shifts to his left and plays the ball into Ribery. He shimmies bast one man but runs into the body of a defender. Moments before, Taison saw a potentially dangerous low cross blocked by Alaba's slide.
40'
Even Robben can't fire on all cylinders, as his trademark cut from the right flank onto his left boot sees him lose his normally glue-like grip on the ball. Fernando steps forward to make the interception.
38'
D. Srna gets yellow.
Ribery looks to progress down the left-hand side, but he's upended by Douglas Costa, who shoulder barges him into the turf. However, it's Srna who is booked for a show of dissent after the referee blew the whistle.
36'
Bayern continue to absolutely monopolize the ball, but they're finding the home side a tough nut to crack. The Bavarians probe and pass, but the gaps aren't appearing.
34'
There's a brief pause in Lyiv as Shevchuk gets some facial treatment. The Shakhtar man is having his head bandaged as he's bleeding from his scalp.
33'
Ouch! Muller accidentally boots Shevchuk in the face! It does seem genuinely accidental, by the way, ther Germany international had his eyes on the ball the entire time.
31'
Was that the best chance yet for Bayern?! Muller, who scored a couple at the weekend in the Germans' 8-0 smashing of Hamburg, is squared the ball 14 yards from goal by Ribery but he's stretching as he smashes his shot over.
30'
It wouldn't surprise me if a red card is handed out here; players are continually shoving and pushing each other and it's just one stray tackle away from some serious escalation.
29'
The corner is excellent and only an inch or two above Robben's radiant head, but Pyatov leaps off his line to claim confidently.
28'
Shakhtar skipper Darijo Srna concedes a corner to prevent any imminent danger from Bayern, who were flooding forwards in Lyiv.
27'
Still no goals in Ukraine with almost a third of the game gone - and clear-cut chances haven't been flowing - but there's plenty of spice in this tie, no doubt about it.
25'
Centre-back Yaroslav Rakytskiy takes the free kick, 30 yards from goal, but the shot is low and Neuer gets down to smother it.
24'
Xabi Alonso gets yellow.
Now it's Alonso who's booked! The Spaniard dived into a slide tackle on Alex Teixeira, who was powering towards Bayern's back three.
23'
Rafinha gets yellow.
Rafinha booked for being a bit of an idiot, trying to wind up a Shakhtar star after conceding a foul 50 yards or so from Bayern's goalmouth.
22'
'How long will it take Shakhtar to tire?' That's a question Guardiola might be asking himself as the hosts scamper enthusiatically about the field.
20'
A flailing Robben boot is enough to earn Vyacheslav Shevchuk a free kick just beyond the halfway line. It's wasted, though, and Bayern have the ball back at their outrageously talented feet.
19'
The free kick which followed that skirmish was looped straight into the hands of Shakhtar shot-stopper Andriy Pyatov.
18'
There's a bit of a scuffle on Bayern's left flank when Douglas Costa clearly fouls David Alaba, causing Franck Ribery to throw a few of his toys out of his proverbial pram. The referee stops the arguing before it devolves into handbags, at least.
16'
Manuel Neuer's doing unorthodox goalkeeping, as always, lingering with the ball at his feet for long enough that the travelling Bayern fans might have feared he'd get tackled!
15'
Now it's Gotze who's penalised, but deep inside Shakhtar's half and it's a harsh call for what seemed like a harmless collision of shoulders.
14'
Fred, on his 50th appearance for Shakhtar, goes to ground in overly-dramatic style, leading to Jerome Boateng getting a telling off from the referee.
13'
The visitors have definitely looked most dangerous when Robben's on the ball. Shakhtar have reacted by swarming players around the winger!
11'
Wonderful play from Robben! The Dutchman sprints past one Shakhtar player, shoulder barges away another then effortlessly breezes into the 18-yard box and squares a tasty ball across the face of goal. Unfortunately for Bayern, Thomas Muller had made a different run. Superb stuff from Robben, though.
9'
The Bundesliga champions and table-toppers are happy to pass the ball around, ignoring boos ringing about the Lyiv Arena. Shakhtar don't seem to yet mind letting the opposition keep possession.
8'
Xabi Alonso and Mario Gotze converse over a set piece near Shaktar's right corner flag, but their training ground effort into the box is fumbled by Robben, who cannot get the ball out of his feet.
6'
Bayern have the hosts camped in their final third now, trying to squeeze probing crosses and lofted passes through Shakhar's defensive gaps.
5'
The set piece is scrambled clear by the visitors without too much of a fuss.
4'
Shakhtar have a free kick out on the right flank as they stifle the initial Bayern forays forward...
2'
BAYERN GO CLOSE! We've barely begun bu already the Bavarians are in their stride. Arjen Robben dinks a ball just inside the box and Bastian Schweinsteiger takes a volleyed swipe, but his improvised effort drags just wide.
1'
And we're under way in Ukraine!
Hello and welcome to Goal's LIVE coverage of Shakhtar Donetsk versus Bayern Munich! Line-ups coming up imminently...
The action is only a few minutes away from Lyiv! The players are coming out of the tunnel in Shakhtar's "home" game, which cannot be played in their actual stadium due to the ongoing battle between Ukrainian troops and separatist forces.
Bayern won the Champions League two years ago, of course, and their star-studded squad of World Cup winners are unsurprisingly the favourites.
Pep Guardiola's men appear to be set up in a 3-3-4 formation but, knowing the ex-Barcelona boss, that will probably be extremely fluid throughout the European battle!
Half time here in Ukraine, and it's goalless. Bayern have predictably dominated the possession, but haven't been able to create much against a resilient defensive effort from the hosts. Truthfully, a 0-0 score won't be the worst thing in the world for either side to take into the second leg, but let's hope for football's sake that they don't settle for that outcome too early. Stay tuned for the restart in just a bit.
And that will do it from the L'viv Arena. Nil-nil is your final score. Eight goals on the weekend for Bayern but none tonight. Shakhtar have kept the Bundesliga champs out, but the Ukrainians might feel like an opportunity has passed them by given that the Bavarians played the final half hour with 10 men, thanks to Alonso's dismissal. The second leg will take place at the Allianz Arena in three weeks.
That's all from me, and I'd like to thank you for joining our live commentary. Till next time.
