And we're off! Porto get us underway, attacking from right to left.
Good evening and welcome to our live text commentary of today's Champions League quarter-final clash between Porto and Bayern Munich. My name is Ben Cullimore and I will be keeping you up to date with all of the action from the Estadio do Dragao.
It’s been an excellent 2015 for Porto, especially on the domestic front, and they head into tonight’s game with just two defeats from their last 20 encounters, 15 of which have ended in victories. However, despite their impressive form, they are arguably the underdogs of the competition, and this evening’s clash is guaranteed to be their sternest test of the season. The Dragoes may have the home advantage but they face a Bayern side that have proven to be nigh on impossible to beat, losing just three competitive games since their elimination from last season’s Champions League at the hands of Real Madrid.
The five-times European champions exhibited their ruthless nature in the previous round of the competition, thrashing Shakhtar Donetsk 7-0 at the Allianz Arena to set up tonight’s tie with their Portuguese opponents. The first leg proved to be a rather cagey affair, however, allowing the Ukrainian side to come away with a priceless goalless draw, and Porto will be looking to do the same tonight as they aim to keep Bayern’s brilliant front line at bay for as long as possible. However, as countless teams will testify, that is far easier said than done...
There’s just over 15 minutes left to go until until kick-off, so let’s have a look at how the two teams will be lining up this evening…
Porto XI (4-3-3): Fabiano; Danilo, Maicon, Martins Indi, Sandro; Herrera, Casemiro, Torres; Quaresma, Martinez, Brahimi.
Porto substitutes: Helton, Reyes, Neves, Hernani, Evandro, Quintero, Aboubakar.
Julen Lopetegui has made four changes to the Porto side that started against Basel in their last Champions League outing, with Bruno Martins Indi, Oliver Torres, Ricardo Quaresma and Jackson Martinez coming into the squad to replace Ivan Marcano, Evandro, Cristian Tello and Vincent Aboubakar.
Meanwhile, a plethora of injuries has forced Bayern boss Pep Guardiola to make five alterations to the side that thrashed Shakhtar, with Dante, Juan Bernat, Philip Lahmn, Xabi Alonso and Thiago replacing Holger Badstuber, David Alaba, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery, respectively.
The two sides are making their way out onto the pitch, with just a few minutes to go until kick-off.
HALF-TIME: PORTO 2-1 BAYERN MUNICH
What an excellent first half that was! Only one team seemed to be awake for the opening 10 minutes, allowing Porto to fly into an early 2-0 lead thanks to two terrible mistakes from Alonso and Dante, respectively. The visitors finally came to life after that, however, and since then they have arguably looked the better side. A great cross from Boateng was turned into the back of the net by Thiago on the half-hour mark and, as a result, they head into the half-time break full of hope that they will be able to complete a much-needed comeback in the second period.
The two teams are making their way back out onto the pitch ahead of the start of the second half. Neither side have made any substitutions during the half-time break.
FULL-TIME: PORTO 3-1 BAYERN MUNICH
Porto have done it! They've managed to hold on and pick up a truly historic victory against a Bayern side that were, quite simply, blown out of the water. The hosts did everything right, defending resolutely when the German side pushed forward before putting them under an incredible amount of pressure in their own half of the pitch, which resulted in their first two goals coming in the opening 10 minutes of the game.
From then onwards, Bayern looked far more assured, and you sensed that they may be able to find a way back into the game. Thiago's well-worked goal on the half-hour mark gave them hope, but they reverted to their old ways after the break and were punished, with Martinez taking advantage of poor defending from Boateng to fire in what would prove to be Porto's final goal of the game. Now, the question is: With a two-goal lead heading into next week's all-important second-leg clash at the Allianz Arena, can Porto do the unthinkable and knock the five-times European champions out of the competition?
My name is Ben Cullimore and it's been an absolute pleasure describing all of the action to you this evening. Until next time, goodbye!
