Good evening and welcome to our live text commentary of today’s Europa League play-off clash between Odd and Borussia Dortmund. My name is Ben Cullimore and I will be keeping you up to date with all of the action from Skagerak Arena.
What a night this is set to be for Odd! This is only the Norwegian side’s third season in the Europa League thanks a third-place finish in last year’s Tippeligaen, and they have pulled off several impressive performances on the way to their first ever European play-off. Sheriff, Shamrock Rovers and Elfsborg have already fallen to the side from Skien, whose European journey - their first since 2004 - started way back at the start of July. They have also looked strong domestically and are currently unbeaten in their last four league games, scoring 15 goals in the process. With nothing to lose against a far stronger opponent, expect them to come out all guns blazing in what is sure to be a fascinating encounter between two very different teams.
Like Odd, Dortmund also find themselves back in the Europa League after a lengthy absence, although, in stark contrast to the Norwegian side, it is the result of success on the Champions League stage. However, a difficult and overall underwhelming campaign last season means that they are back in Europe’s second competition after only managing to finish in seventh place in the Bundesliga. The familiar figure of Jurgen Klopp has gone and Thomas Tuchel has taken his place, and the new boss got off to the best possible start with a 6-0 thrashing of Austrian side Wolfsberger in the previous round of the competition before kick-starting the new domestic season by thumping Borussia Monchengladbach 4-0. With his side in such fine form, the former Mainz manager will be incredibly confident about their chances of easing past this evening’s opponents and into the group stage for the first time in five years.
There’s just over 15 minutes left to go until until kick-off, so let’s have a look at how the two teams will be lining up this evening…
Dag-Eilev Fagermo has decided to make just one change to the Odd side that started last weekend’s 4-0 thrashing of Start, with Fredrik Oldrup Jensen coming into the squad to take the place of Ardian Gashi, who drops to the substitutes’ bench.
Meanwhile, Dortmund boss Thomas Tuchel has made five alterations to the side that started Saturday’s comprehensive win at home to Monchengladbach, with Roman Burki, Lukas Piszczek, Sokratis Papastathopoulos, Julian Weigl and Marco Reus (the latter of whom hasn’t travelled with the squad) dropping out to be replaced by Roman Weidenfeller, Gonzalo Castro, Matthias Ginter, Sven Bender and Kevin Kampl, respectively.
The two sides are making their way out onto the pitch, with just a few minutes to go until kick-off.
HALF-TIME: ODD 3-1 BORUSSIA DORTMUND
What a truly remarkable 45 minutes! Dortmund came into tonight's game as firm favourites to leave with a first-leg victory under their belts, but Odd have surprised everyone and head into the half-time break with a well-deserved 3-1 lead. The Bundesliga side completely fell asleep at the start, allowing the hosts to fire themselves in front after just 14 seconds, before defensive sloppiness resulted in further misery being piled on the visitors.
Dortmund started to look better towards the end of the opening period but still struggled against the Odd defence, who have been incredibly compact and well-organised thus far. It's going to be tough for the German side to break them down in what is guaranteed to be another exciting second half.
The two teams are making their way back out onto the pitch ahead of the start of the second half.
FULL-TIME: ODD 3-4 BORUSSIA DORTMUND
Dortmund leave Skien with a 4-3 first-leg advantage at the end of what will forever be remembered as one of the craziest nights in Europa League history! A dream start gave Odd a 3-0 first-half lead but in the end they just didn't have enough in the tank to see off the determined German side, who looked excellent during a second half in which Thomas Tuchel's substitutions played an important role.
The two sides will meet again at Signal Iduna Park next Thursday evening. Fingers crossed that clash is as exciting and action-packed as this one was!

In the end, Dortmund certainly deserve the victory after putting in a fantastic display in the second half. Gundogan was arguably the man of the match after playing such an important role in each of his side's attacking moves. He finished the game with a passing accuracy of 91.7% and made 81 passes in Odd's half of the pitch, the most of any player (via Opta).
