Penalty shootout: J. Mascherano (Argentina) scored!
122'
Penalty shootout: N. Castillo (Chile) scored!
Penalty shootout: L. Messi (Argentina) missed!
121'
Penalty shootout: A. Vidal (Chile) missed!
120'
No time added on - we're headed for penalties!
119'
Chile are playing for penalties now as fatigue sets in at the back. Argentina aren't quite keen on tempting fate just yet, and you can hardly blame them considering how penalties failed them in this match last year - but it's looking like that's what it's going to take now to produce a winner!
117'
Argentina pour the pressure on and they're coming close with some teasing balls into the box! Bravo claims a cross and quickly launches one forward for Puch, but that's not the route he should have taken as the ball comes right back at the Chile defence who desperately needed a second to breath there!
Minute
Description
115'
DEFLECTED ABOVE AND BEYOND! After a lengthy wait, the entire stadium abuzz with anticipation, the end result is a letdown as Messi can't get his free-kick over the wall as it deflects over the bar for a corner.
113'
This could be the chance! Silva trips up Messi from behind, virtually in the centre of the pitch and well within the forward's range. Can he produce some more brilliance from the ensuing free-kick? He'll have to wait to take it as Medel is involved in another melee, with tempers continuing to flair.
111'
É. Lamela enters the game and replaces É. Banega.
Erik Lamela comes on as the third and final change for Argentina - in fact, both teams are out of substitutions now. He replaces Banega for the final 10 minutes.
110'
Great read by Romero! Castillo makes his presence felt straight away, producing a lovely, diagonal run to get behind the defence and chase down a throughball, but Romero sprints off his line and out of his area, sliding it at the vital moment to clear the threat!
109'
N. Castillo enters the game and replaces E. Vargas.
Nicolas Castillo is handed his first appearance of the tournament and what a time for it! The striker replaces Vargas, who will be taking home the golden boot in all likelihood.
108'
Both teams had an honest go at finding a winner in the first half of extra-time, but with penalties creeping ever closer, neither side will want to make the mistake that sees them concede the elusive first goal, which would surely be enough to win it for the scoring side at this point.
106'
And they're back underway...
105'
Half-time in extra-time!
104'
F. Silva enters the game and replaces A. Sánchez.
Alexis Sanchez has had a difficult night, showing flashes of his skill but largely being kept on the periphery. He hasn't looked quite right since injuring his ankle early on and his night ends here with midfielder Francisco Silva on to replace him.
103'
Well it has been anything but dull in this extra frame, resembling nothing of what we saw through the opening 90 minutes! The tempo continues at this incredible rate, as Aguero wins a corner, but again Bravo storms off his line to claim it!
101'
WORLD CLASS! SENSATIONAL GOALKEEPING! That's a piece of brilliance from Bravo to get across at full-stretch to knock a marvelous Aguero effort over the bar! The Argentina striker did incredibly well to send a looping header to goal and he thought he had the breakthrough!
99'
SPLENDID COUNTER! Puch is sprung into acres of space down the left via a ball over the top, and the substitute picks out Vargas in the centre with a delightful cross. The striker heads at goal, but doesn't get the required power as Romero is able to parry!
97'
It's coming to life now! Argentina take the initiative to push forward in search of a breakthrough, and it leads to a few panicked moments in the Chile defence. Aguero has a shot blocked from in close, before a strong tackle atop the area stops an inquisitive run from Messi, and now Chile can break!
95'
OUCH! Funes Mori catches Jara with a late challenge, getting his studs into the ankle of the opposing defender. That's a real dangerous challenge, but the referee doesn't produce a booking as the inconsistencies continue here.
94'
M. Kranevitter gets yellow.
The yellow card makes another appearance as Kranevitter is booked not for his foul, but the rather ludicrous reaction which followed. There was no need for that from the midfielder punching the ground and screaming at the referee for what was a clear foul, so who knows what he was arguing about.
93'
There's an early and lengthy stoppage in extra-time as Aranguiz comes out worse for wear after a 50-50 collision with Biglia. He was caught by the Argentina midfielder as he goes down for a second time tonight, and he's really been battling knock after knock in this Copa Centenario.
91'
Back underway at MetLife!
90' +3
There will be 30 more minutes at MetLife! Stick around as the fun continues in this Copa Centenario final after a quick break for the players to collect themselves and grab a breather.
90' +2
Two of the three added minutes have elapsed as the match beckons for extra-time.
90' +1
Back the other way come Argentina through Messi, who goes all the way himself, but he can't hit the target from atop the area!
90'
THAT WAS THE CHANCE FOR CHILE! Oh my they've come so close to defending their title! They surge forward on the break with Beausejour making an exceptional run on the overlap. He squares for Alexis atop the six-yard box, but Funes Mori makes a crucial intervention to break up the chance!
88'
Argentina win a free-kick on the far side, about seven yards away from the corner flag. Anticipation builds as bodies cram in the centre, but Banega's delivery is a massive letdown, allowing Chile to clear their lines. Chances have been few and far between in this match and that's not the sort of quality that will produce the breakthrough.
86'
STAT: Argentina have reached the Copa America final for the fourth time in the last five editions, losing each of them and failing to score in the last two - Brazil 2004, Brazil 2007, Chile 2015.
84'
HORRIBLE MISS! Aguero takes a pass atop the area and rides out Jara's challenge brilliantly to get into space for a shot, but he uncharacteristically skies his effort! You always fancy him to hit the target from there, but clearly the pressure of the occasion got to him!
82'
Following a decent spell from both sides it's starting to fizzle out again, with the chance of extra-time now amplified. There was nothing to separate these two sides after 120 minutes in last year's final, which required penalties, and that seems to be the direction we're heading once again.
80'
E. Puch enters the game and replaces J. Fuenzalida.
The always energetic Edson Puch comes on to replace Fuenzalida in Chile's first change of the night.
ROMERO SAVES! Sanchez does brilliantly to send Vargas through into the area on the end of a diagonal ball over the top. The striker has a good look, but from a bit of a difficult angle he's thwarted by Romero - the first save the keeper has had to make tonight!
78'
It looks like Mercado got his knee into Sanchez's thigh, which suggests a possible charley horse. There's no doubt it's a painful one for the Chile forward, but if that's the case, it won't force him off at least, as play gets underway again with him off the pitch.
76'
Chile win a corner through Isla, but they're unable to test Romero again, before a follow-up cross from Sanchez is sent straight into the keeper's arms... and it gets worse for Chile a few seconds later as Alexis drops to the ground in significant pain after a collision with Mercado right at the halfway line.
74'
Tensions are rising as the pressure mounts with just over 15 minutes left, as the possibility of extra-time looms larger. Any mistake would be magnified at this stage, and neither side wants to be the ones to push bodies forward and leave themselves exposed. It's getting a bit stale.
72'
STAT: Brazil is the only country to successfully defend their crown at the Copa America since the switch to the new format in 1993 – they did so twice (1997 and 1999; 2004 and 2007).
70'
S. Agüero enters the game and replaces G. Higuaín.
Higuain had one look at goal tonight and squandered his chance. It's another major final without a goal for the striker as he gives way to Sergio Kun Aguero for the final 20 minutes.
69'
C. Aránguiz gets yellow.
Messi is a bit lucky! Aranguiz is penalised and booked for a foul on the Barcelona forward, but the referee made the call, whereas the linesman closer to it didn't deem it as a foul! The Chile players shout for Messi to be booked again for simulation, but that would have been incredibly harsh.
67'
Argentina are creating precious little going forward, as Chile continue to grow in stature. Despite being unable to test Romero up to this point, Chile will have to be the happier of the two sides approaching the final 20 minutes for how well they've suffocated this usually scintillating Argentina attack.
65'
DELICIOUS COUNTER! Chile break forward in numbers, through Sanchez, and they have Argentina caught out. Alexis switches for Fuenzalida, who crosses back towards the Arsenal forward at the far post, but the flag goes up as the chance goes begging! They have to be testing Romero there.
63'
The pace has picked up as we pass the hour mark, with both teams starting to adopt a more direct approach in possession. Sanchez and Messi, two vital attacking figures, are starting to get involved, having been afforded surprisingly little space up to this point. The game is there for the taking... who can reach out and snatch it?
61'
STAT: There were 145 ball recoveries in the first match between Chile and Argentina, the most in one game at the Copa America Centenario.
59'
Confident goalkeeping from Bravo who rises high to claim a corner amidst a mess of bodies in the centre. Funes Mori was lurking and is a bit frustrated at not getting a chance to head at goal, and so he steps into the back of the keeper who goes down in a heap! It goes unnoticed by the referee, but that's a real cynical one from the Argentina centre-half.
57'
M. Kranevitter enters the game and replaces Á. Di María.
HE'S NOT HAPPY! Di Maria is absolutely livid as he gives way here for the remainder of the match for Matias Kranevitter. He kicks a waterbottle and then takes out his frustration on the bench, clearly disagreeing with Martino's decision to sub him off here.
56'
WIDE! Despite holding over 55 per cent possession, that's just the first shot of the night attempted by a Chile player. A well-worked move doesn't quite come to fruition, but it comes out to Isla atop the area. The full-back lashes at it first-time, but sends a tame half-volley harmlessly wide of the far post.
54'
Messi picks up the ball and drives straight at the Chile defence. Beausejour and Vidal, both on yellows, converge to take him to ground, and the referee is immediately swarmed by Albiceleste players who plead for a second yellow. They don't care who gets sent off, they just want to see a card produced, but the referee shows a bit of spine as he's not influenced by the crowd, leaving it as a free-kick and nothing more.
52'
J. Beausejour gets yellow.
Chile have enjoyed the bulk of possession since the restart, but a sloppy giveaway invited Argentina on and Beausejour has to commit a professional foul to stop a break, which sees him go into the book.
50'
THE WHISTLE SAVES ARGENTINA! Chile press high up the pitch and win the ball, before sending a cross into the area for Sanchez. The winger knocks it into the centre where Mercado intervenes. The full-back is dispossessed by Vargas, who could well be through on goal, but the referee deems the striker won it illegally and awards Argentina a free-kick!
48'
There's going to be a lot more space on the pitch, with two less players competing, which should lead to a lot more goal-mouth action in this second half. It will be very interesting to see how the approach changes for these two sides over the duration of the match, but for the time being very little has changed - aside from Mascherano dropping to centre-half to fill the back four.
46'
Here we go again!
45' +5
HALF-TIME: ARGENTINA 0-0 CHILE.
45' +3
The tempo picks up a bit in stoppage time, but there's little attacking quality to speak of. A careless giveaway at the back affords Alexis a chance to run through and pick out a cross, but a heavy touch from the forward sends the ball behind for a goal-kick. He's looked off since rolling his ankle early in the match.
45' +1
There will be five minutes added on at the end of this crazy first half.
45'
Vidal finals pops up after getting some attention from the training staff. It was a nasty knock that he picked up, but it doesn't look like it will force him off. The referee has made this all about him in the first half and it has to be said, he's lost the plot. That's a clear make-up call. He likely realised he never should have sent Diaz off in the first place and set out to make amends.
43'
M. Rojo goes off after a red card!
BOTH TEAMS DOWN TO 10 MEN! Unbelievable! The referee acts incredibly hastily, running in wildly to produce a straight red to Rojo following a tackle on Vidal which was made a lot worse by the Chile midfielder's reaction, and that of the players around him.
40'
L. Messi gets yellow.
Messi goes down theatrically inside the area in an appeal for a penalty, but the referee is the wiser. Chile crowd around the Brazilian official as they ask for the Barcelona forward to be booked. The referee takes a second to think about it before producing a yellow card. It's all unraveling here as the bookings start to pile up.
39'
STAT: Lionel Messi scored twice (both penalties) in the 2005 FIFA Under-20 World Cup final for Argentina, but he has not managed to score in any of his four final appearances for the senior side (2007 and 2015 Copa America, 2008 Olympics and 2014 World Cup).
37'
A. Vidal gets yellow.
J. Mascherano gets yellow.
Vidal is also booked for his part in the scuffle.
Mascherano is booked for his unnecessary reaction to the foul.
36'
Argentina clear their lines following a Chile free-kick, before Fuenzalida catches Mascherano with a high boot. It was entirely accidental, but the Albiceleste midfielder takes exception which prompts yet another coming together as tempers quickly start to boil over. The referee has to take charge!
34'
The referee is looking a bit overwhelmed as every bit of contact is coming under intense scrutiny now. Both sets of fans are a bit agitated, caught off guard by what has been an incredibly fierce opening half, and it's showing no signs of slowing as the referee starts to lose his grip a bit.
32'
Chile are growing frustrated, but they've done well to absorb any pressure Argentina have tried to muster up to this point. There's been no tactical switch yet as they stay in a 4-2-3, but there will be extra responsibility on the likes of Fuenzalida and Sanchez to track back.
30'
The whole scope of this final is changed now, with Chile surely set to come under a lot of pressure over the final hour following Diaz's sending off. It has been such a physical contest thus far, and the referee had done well up to then of keeping the cards in his pocket, so it's a curious decision to seem him produce yellow there - it's no worse than a lot of other fouls we've seen up to this point.
28'
M. Díaz gets a second yellow card and is sent off.
CHILE DOWN TO 10 MEN! Diaz is caught flat-footed and stands his ground, obstructing the path of a surging Messi who drops to the ground. It's indeed a foul, but a second yellow card? That's an incredibly harsh decision by the referee.
27'
STAT: Argentina are playing in their third successive major final (2014 World Cup, 2015 and 2016 Copa America). Both previous finals went scoreless through 90 minutes.
25'
THEY THOUGHT IT WAS IN! The Argentina fans on the far side of the stadium celebrate what they think is the opening goal, as Otamendi rises above Vidal to head a cross into the side-netting! They're inching closer to the breakthrough they desperately crave...
23'
WHAT. A. CHANCE! So nearly the moment Argentina have been waiting for! Medel slips at the back and it allows Higuain to pounce on a back-pass and sprint clean through on goal. He tries to chip Bravo and manages to get the ball over the keeper, but can't find the back of the net as it drifts beyond the far post! He looks to the heavens in disbelief!
21'
It's coming to life again! Chile reply with an enticing move of their own, getting down the left-hand side before a clever switch of play presents Fuenzalida with a shooting chance inside the area. The winger opts to try and pass it as opposed to go for goal himself, and he's made to regret it in the end as Argentina clear their lines.
19'
Everything but the finish! Di Maria gets on the end of a weak clearance as Argentina continue on the ascendancy. He shows excellent close control to dribble his way into the area and past a challenge, but lifts his final strike miles over the bar!
17'
If anyone's allowed to have a shot from there - 30 yards out, just to the right of goal - it's Messi. The forward does try his luck, but Bravo reads it the whole way and makes a rather comfortable save in the end.
16'
M. Díaz gets yellow.
THERE'S MESSI! He makes his first contribution of the night, taking a pass from Higuain and spearheading a quick counter, before being hacked to ground by Diaz. The Chile midfielder is shown the first yellow of the match and will have to tread a fine line the rest of the way.
15'
After such a lively start to proceedings, it has developed into a rather choppy and physical affair. Chile are on top at the moment, enjoying more time on the ball and able to get into the attacking half, though there's been little end product to speak of thus far.
13'
STAT: This is the second time in Copa America history that there is a rematch of the previous final. Argentina and Brazil played each other in the 2004 and 2007 finals, with the Albiceleste losing both (the first one on penalties – they lost to Chile on penalties last year).
11'
All three injured players are back on the pitch, though Aranguiz doesn't look to be quite at 100 per cent as he's tripped up by Mascherano at the halfway line - winning his side a free-kick - but he stays down for a few second, clearly bothered by something. He won't even look at the sideline, however, as he has every intention on playing through the pain.
9'
Misery loves company and that seems to be what's happening here. The tempo has completely fizzled out with the slew of early injuries, and there's another now for Chile as Charles Aranguiz goes down in obvious pain - and the stretcher is coming out for him, though it looks like it's just a precaution.
7'
They're dropping like flies! Di Maria shows quick feet to force Isla into a foul directly in front of the corner flag, but the Argentina winger comes out worse for wear as he stays on the ground clutching his knee. That's not the same injury that was nagging him throughout the tournament, which is encouraging, but again it's something to keep an eye on.
5'
A real worry for Chile as Alexis Sanchez goes down after rolling his ankle near the top of the penalty area. The Arsenal forward actually left training with a knock yesterday, and completed practice on his own, so this has to be a concern for La Roja.
3'
The tempo has been excellent in the early going. Both teams are pressing high up the pitch, and there's been no shortage of ferocity as the two sides look to set the tone physically as well.
1'
AND WE'RE OFF! Argentina get us underway, attacking left to right in their Albiceleste stripes, with Chile in all red.
FLYING START FROM ARGENTINA! They waste no time getting on the front foot, via a route one ball over the top, and Banega unleashes an effort inches wide of the far post from 25 yards!
Hello and welcome to our live coverage of the Copa America Centenario final from MetLife Stadium between Argentina and Chile!
The stage is set as these familiar foes contest a rematch of the 2015 final. Argentina are hoping to exorcise their demons and win a first major trophy since 1993, while Chile try to defend their crown and win a second Copa America title just a year after claiming their first!
Argentina have ripped through their competition in the tournament, maintaining a perfect record through to the final, with Lionel Messi and company appearing as motivated as ever to deliver the Albiceleste the international success they so desperately crave after successive final defeats.
Standing in their way are a Chile side who, after being humbled to the tune of a 2-1 defeat to Argentina in their opening match, have righted the ship under Juan Antonio Pizzi, looking much more dangerous and confident than they did three weeks ago, having grown in stature since the start of the tournament.
And so here we are, 20 days removed from Argentina’s 2-1 victory over Chile to open Group D, and the two proud nations come face to face again with everything on the line. It’s safe to say, regardless of who’s left celebrating after the final whistle, these sides have established themselves as the most deserving champions over the course of the last month.
No surprises in Gerardo Martino's team selection as he makes two changes from the semi-final victory over the United States. Angel di Maria has recovered from an adductor problem, replacing the injured Ezequiel Lavezzi in the starting line-up, as Nico Gaitan is left on the bench despite making his return from suspension. Also missing out through injury is Atletico Madrid's Augusto Fernandez, with Lucas Biglia taking his place in midfield.
Just two changes made by Juan Antonio Pizzi following their prolonged victory against Colombia. Arturo Vidal and Marcelo Diaz return from suspension and injury respectively as they're thrust right back into the starting line-up at the expense of Francisco Silva and Pablo Hernandez, joining Charles Aranguiz in midfield.
The trend continues at this Copa America as regulations stop the music to the Chile anthem after 90 seconds, but the players and fans continue acapella! The atmosphere is absolutely spectacular inside the stadium, with both teams well-represented. We should be underway in just a few short moments!
Players crowd the referee as the half-time whistle sounds, following a wild and controversial opening 45 minutes at MetLife Stadium. What started as an exciting and physical contest has turned into a sideshow act as a result of the referee's discretion - or lack there of. Gonzalo Higuain missed the best chance of the half for either side, before red cards shown to Marcelo Diaz and Marcos Rojo stole the spotlight.
Diaz was the first to be sent off, picking up an incredibly harsh second yellow for a rather unavoidable and soft foul on Messi just shy of the half-hour mark. The referee realised his mistake and went in search of a way to right his wrong, which saw Rojo issued a straight red for a foul - but not one deserving of a sending off - on Vidal, and that's where we sit heading into the break.
The players are slowly making their way out of the tunnel as the second half gets set to resume. It was looking a bit ominous for Chile following Diaz's sending off, but Rojo has followed him out the door as it remains perfectly poised in advance of the final 45 minutes - let's just hope football takes centre stage in the second half.
Still nothing to separate these two sides as the rematch is following a similar path to the 2015 final. The two red cards didn't open things up as much as originally expected, but it did come to life late in the second half, which could be a sign of what's to come over the final 30 minutes... and possibly penalties!
Two reds, eight yellows and plenty of chaos through 105 minutes, but still no goals and that's why we play on here at MetLife, with just 15 minutes left for either side to find a winner or we're heading for penalties!
Three of the last five Copa finals have now been decided on penalties, including each of the last two as this rematch of last year's final plays out to the same result through 120 minutes. Chile went on to win it in spot-kicks last year - will history repeat itself or will Argentina end a lengthy major trophy drought?
The teams gather amongst themselves and rally together as we get set to begin here. You can cut the tension in the stadium with a knife! Here we go....
MESSI SKIES IT! Well would you believe it! The pressure gets to Messi and he lifts his penalty over the bar! Wow!
DREAM START FOR ARGENTINA! Romero guesses right to deny Vidal as La Roja fall behind the eight-ball right off the bat!
1-1! Mascherano puts everything behind his penalty as he sends Bravo the wrong way to tie it up.
FIRST BLOOD TO CHILE! Castillo was brought on for penalties and you can see why. Wonderful take from the young striker there.
LOOK WHAT IT MEANS TO HIM! Aranguiz had a difficult season but that makes it all worth it for him as he beats Romero who stayed central.
NERVY! Bravo guesses right but just can't get his fingertips to a slow, but brilliantly placed penalty from Aguero! We're tied up at two!
PERFECT! Beausejour sends an unstoppable penalty into the top corner, with Romero guessing wrong!
CHILE ARE A PENALTY AWAY NOW! Bravo guesses right and gets two strong hands to deny Biglia, and Chile are on the verge of defending their crown!
CHILE WIN THE COPA AMERICA CENTENARIO! Francisco Silva sends Romero the wrong way and Chile can commence their celebrations!
